Why Do We Develop Fears and Phobias?

When dealing with phobias and fears there is rarely one single cause, there may be a number of factors involved.  A phobia may have developed from a particular event or trauma such as being bitten by a dog or a bad flight experience, sometimes this stems from childhood.

Or it may have been a learned response that you’ve picked up from someone else, such as your mother screaming when she saw a mouse or a spider!  (Your unconscious mind may have learned that this is the natural response).

Possibly, a genetic factor may be involved as well, as you might be born with more anxious tendencies.

Those who struggle with mental health conditions, such as anxiety, long term stress or depression are also thought to be more likely to develop fears and phobias.

How Can Hypnotherapy Help with Phobias?

Phobias are an irrational fear, they can be highly distressing and have a major impact on people’s lives, but just as this behaviour has been learned, so it can be unlearned. Through the use of hypnotherapy it is possible to release this fear.   Your unconscious mind is constantly scanning for patterns, looking for similarities.  This information is interpreted, filtered and stored in our brains, based on our own particular model of the world.  Your unconscious mind is working in protection mode, it believes this behaviour is keeping you safe and it has developed this unwanted automatic response.  Your unconscious mind identifies this issue as a threat and responds accordingly, going back to learnt behaviour patterns that have been stored.  Adrenalin and cortisol are released into our system to enable us to flight, fight or freeze.  Your mind is unable to determine the difference between a real threat and a perceived one, but it will still respond in the same way.   Over time as this reoccurs, this response becomes more and more tiring and escalates your anxiety levels.

Hypnosis for Phobias

Hypnotherapy aims to update this learnt behaviour to release you of this threat response, to change to the behaviour that you desire, so you no longer have this fear.

Using hypnotherapy, I can help you to disassociate from your fear or phobia, using specific techniques that take any difficult emotions out of the experience.  A more appropriate response is developed based on how you’d like to see yourself without the particular fear or phobia, enabling your unconscious mind to become indifferent to your issue, so that you will be able to cope in the future.

Through hypnosis you will find yourself in a relaxed state, in which you will be in control the whole time.  You may need to work through to the root cause of your phobia and using different techniques I will guide you to change your response to the phobia in a calm state.
