What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is also known as hypnosis for childbirth. It has been developed alongside UK midwives and is supported by clinical evidence. The Easibirthing hypnobirthing programme is used as part of Salisbury District Hospital NHS Trust’s parent education programme. It has been gaining in popularity in recent years, and it has been rumoured that a royal recently used this during her pregnancy!

It is known that anxiety and stress can have an adverse effect on pregnancy and labour, affecting women’s minds and bodies and hypnobirthing enables women to manage this effectively. This programme teaches women to access their inner calm and confidence, enabling them to stay in control and through relaxation, breathing and visualisation techniques they are able to maintain this in labour and beyond. By using a combination of techniques, women are taught to manage the subconscious issues that can negatively affect childbirth and parenting.

Childbirth is a natural physiological process that a woman’s body is fully designed to manage and should be one of the most amazing and unique experiences of our lives. Easibirthing is about empowering you to manage your individual experience and not fear it. Although it doesn’t guarantee that birth will be pain-free, without any complication or medical intervention. Research has revealed however, that lower levels of pain or discomfort and the need for medical intervention has been shown to be lessened by using hypnosis and parents have reported a more positive birthing experience, which has enabled a stronger bond between mother, partner and baby. By learning these techniques women have learned to trust their bodies and remain in control and feeling calm even when a birth experience has not been straight forward, giving them every chance of the best outcome for their baby and themselves.
